Port of Murmansk (currently registered as OJSC "Murmansk Commercial Seaport") was established in 1915. The Port is located on the eastern side of the Kola Bay, by the Barents Sea.
Port of Murmansk takes a unique place in comparison with other northern ports of Russia due to its geographical location and climatic conditions. While being at the North Pole, the Port is ice-free the year round.
Another feature of the Port of Murmansk is that it is a tidal port having the water level fluctuating up to 4 m during a day.
As to the production capacity, the Port is the second one among the ports of CIS and Baltic countries handling coal. In 2008 the Port transshiped about 11 mio mt of coal.
The running characteristics of the Port related to coal handling are 7 berths, each of up to 300 m long and permitted draft from 9,2 m to 14 m on the zero water level. Port of Murmansk is fitted out for loading of vessels having deadweight of up to 100 000 mt.
