Railway Deliveries
Fairly significant amount of coal is exported from Russia by railway directly to the countries of destination.
However, the cost of railway transportation is considerably higher than the cost of seaborne deliveries and therefore it is economically reasonable to handle this type of export only towards the neighboring countries. As a consequence, Russian coal is used to be railed to Eastern Europe, Ukraine and Baltic countries.
Other encumbrances to develop the export by rail are the capacity of the cross-border stations and difference in width of the guage in Russia and European countries, which requires either wheel handling or reloading of coal from wagons to wagons.
